THE MASTERS
There are more then 300 different Yoga styles being taught and practiced today. This makes it difficult to find the right style for oneself. I’ve tried many different approaches, and I personally prefer the classic Hatha Yoga as taught by Swami Sivanada and his students.
In Yoga there is no better or worse, it is just your personal experience which will guide you to find out your preferred style.
Here is a short summary about the Master and his greatest disciple Swami Vishnudevananda:
Swami Sivananda (1887 – 1963)
Swami Sivananda was born in 1887 in Pattamadei, India and was one of the greatest Yoga-masters and teachers of Vedanta (positive thinking).
After practicing medicine for many years he decided to devote his life entirely to Yoga and to spread this ancient knowledge around the world.
In Rishikesh, India, he founded the Sivananda Ashram and the Divine Life Society.
He is one of the most significant saints of modern India and has popularized the wisdom of Yoga and Vedanta throughout the world. He wrote more than 200 books and was the author of many articles that have been published in professional journals and newspapers. Yet his books emphasized the practical application of yoga philosophy over mere theoretical knowledge. He was known to have said: "An ounce of practice is better than tons of theory. Practice Yoga, Religion and Philosophy in daily life and attain Self-realization."
The teachings of Master Sivananda are summarized in these 6 words:
"Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realise".
In 1957, Swami Sivananda sent his devoted and industrious disciple, Swami Vishnu-devananda, to the West where he then established the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers, in order to pass the knowledge and the wisdom to help people all over the world.

Swami Vishnudevananda (1927 – 1993)

Swami Vishnudevananda was born in Kerala, India, in 1927. After a short career in the army he read an article written by Swami Sivanada which touched him so deep that he decided to go to Rishikesh and meet the master. He devoted his life to Yoga and his guru at the age of 20. He became an exceptional adept in the path of Hatha Yoga and was a very keen and tireless Karma Yogi.
One day Swami Sivananda gave Swami Vishnudevananda 10 Rupees and his blessings to travel to the West and spread the teachings. "People are waiting" were the words of the Master.
In the name of his master Swami Vishnudevananda founded the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers and established an organisation to promote universal peace (The True World Order).
He was a world renowned Master of Hatha – and Raja Yoga and he initiated numerous public peace actions.
